Impact windows are a real product. So are roll shutters.
Impact-resistant windows replace the existing glass and frame with laminated impact-rated glazing engineered for wind-borne debris. The product was developed for hurricane and tropical cyclone zones and is increasingly available on premium Ontario residential builds.
Roll shutters are a different format — an exterior slat curtain rolling into a head box above the existing opening. They add protection without replacing the underlying window, and they also serve blackout, sunshade, security, and smart-home scheduling on the same hardware.
For most Ontario buying decisions, the choice isn’t which product is better in the abstract. It’s whether the existing windows are due for replacement anyway and whether there are daily-use jobs (blackout, security framing, smart schedules) that the glass alone can’t do.

Pick impact windows when these things are true.

- You're already replacing every window in the house as part of a major renovation. Folding impact glazing into a planned replacement adds the protection without a second exterior install.
- You want zero visible exterior hardware. No head box, no tracks, no slats — the window simply looks like a standard window from the curb.
- You're focused exclusively on glazing performance — daylight transmission, U-factor, low-E coatings — and don't need blackout or sunshade as a separate function.
- The architectural review or heritage approval on the property won't permit exterior shutter infrastructure but will permit upgraded glazing in the same frame profile.
Pick roll shutters when these things are true.
Where roll shutters tend to win on an Ontario residential install.
- Your existing windows are in good shape and you don't want to replace them. Roll shutters add protection over the windows you have without a full window project.
- You want blackout, sunshade, and smart-home scheduling — not just impact protection. Roll shutters serve all of those on the same hardware; glass alone doesn't.
- You want a security spec with reinforced locking pins, insurance documentation, and Ontario underwriter familiarity. The dedicated security line is engineered for this.

Rule of thumb

Honest limits on both products.
Both are hardening layers, not invincibility. Worth saying out loud before you buy either:
- Neither product makes a home break-in proof. Both raise the cost of entry meaningfully; a determined intruder with the right tools can defeat either given enough time.
- Impact windows protect only the openings that are replaced. A retrofit on selective openings leaves the rest of the glazing on the building untouched.
- Motorized roll shutters need power. Manual override is the failsafe during outages. Impact glazing is passive and doesn’t share this constraint.
- Neither product blocks UV damage on adjacent interior furnishings on its own. UV-coated glazing or low-E films do that job — ask whichever installer you choose to specify the UV performance separately.
